Passions and Pressures: Which Wins Out?

Inline ImageThese are tough times.  I'm sure I don't have to tell you that.  Everyone I know has felt the pressure of our faltering economy.  Whether it has affected you as severely as job loss or as little as adjusting your spending habits, it has changed you.  You are feeling the pressure of change.

So, in these times of change, how do you know if you should be moving ahead with your passions or adjusting them based on current conditions? It's a great question.  Unfortunately there is not a simple answer.  It all depends. Don't you love that answer?  If you are at that point of questioning your passions, here's what I suggest.

  1. Review your passions.  Make your list of what you must want to be, do or have.  These passions are really irrespective of current conditions. They are how you see yourself in an ideal state.  If for example, your passion is to be a successful entreprenuer, your passion doesn't change because of the economy.  How you get to be successful may change, but your passion doesn't.

  2. Review your current state of being.  How are you doing?  How are you feeling?  You want to take stock of your emotional and physical being.  Listen to your body and soul.  What are they telling you?  If you are feeling stress, anxiety, pressure that doesn't feel good, then you are probably resisting nature.  You are trying to make something happen that won't.  Sometimes we get so stuck in trying to control the way things should be, we don't let go.  Your current state is trying to tell you to change the process of living out your passions.

  3. Reflect.  What I have found positive about this natural contracting state is that it gives you the opportunity to reflect upon and become even more clear about your passions.  When you are forced to questions what should be it opens the world of what can be.  For example, I was recently forced to make a decision about where I am to live.  I have strugggled for months.  I have almost been paralyzed by having to make a decision between having my passion present in my life and giving it up.  I became depressed and I isolated myself from the things I love to do and people I love to see. All because I was angry about the possibility of giving up my passion.

  4. Become Clear and Change.  That's when I re-read The Passion Test by Janet Bray Attwood and Chris Attwood. That's when I really paid attention to what my body was telling me.  The state of my being reflected that I was not living my passion now. Once I let go of my belief of what should be, I was able to see what could be.  My passion was not just about a physical space, it was more about the emotional and physical space. My passion is not for a home over looking the water, but about a home over looking the water where I could entertain and enjoy my friends and family.   I got clear on my passion and changed my focus from loss to opportunity.  I am now moving closer to my passion by giving up me belief of what should be.  And along with letting go of that false belief, I have let go of the stress, the anxitey, the depression and, yes, the pressure.  My true passion has won out over the pressure.

The Universal Laws: Cause and Effect

There are 7 Universal laws (some say there are as many as 12) that govern all that we do. I began with the law of attraction and last month we reviewed the law of polarity.  Over the next 4 months I will take each remaining law separately and explain as best i can how these laws show up in your life and the affect they have.

Before I begin with the law of cause and effect, let’s review the 7 universal laws.  These are the laws of:

    1.    Perpetual Transmutation
    2.    Relativity
    3.    Vibration (Attraction)
    4.    Polarity
    5.    Rhythm
    6.    Cause and Effect
    7.    Gender

So, let’s go in deeper into the law of cause and effect.

The law of cause and effect is commonly referred to as karma.  What you give you receive.  Like begets like.  What goes around comes around.  The trick is that you may not know what was the cause of the effect.  And, given that the effect does not immediately follow the cause, it can be very difficult to determine exactly what the cause was.

So, how do you ensure you get the effects you want?  The best place to start is to reflect on your thoughts. As I have discussed before in this newsletter and on my blog, BridgingGaps, what you think about you bring about. So, if things are not going right in your world, see if you can trace them back. You will typically have to follow the path of your actions.  Your actions when then lead you to why you did what you did and that would be your thought or belief.

For example, let's say that your love life is not what you had hoped.  If the effect is that you are sitting home alone on a Friday night and wishing you were out with someone, let's try to find the cause. Start with your actions. What actions have you taken to put yourself in the position to be out on a Friday night with someone?  Have you taken any?  Be honest with yourself.  Taking no action is action.  Or, have you taken the opposite actions of what you "say" you want to have.   Have you shut yourself off to options because you don't want to be hurt?  Have you turned down offers because they weren't exactly what you were hoping for?   Remember, everything happens for a reason.  There is a reason you are alone.

Now, look at those actions and try to trace back to the belief.

The truly wonderful thing about this law is that by definition we should be able to manifest that which we truly want (the effect), simply by exerting the same causes that others before us have exerted and been successful.

How to Maximize the Positive Effect of Cause and Effect

  1. State your belief clearly. What is it and why is it important to you?

  2. Visualize your outcome.  Be clear about the results you want and the feelings surrounding that result.

  3. Find a model to replicate.  You don't have to come up with a new way of doing things.  repeat the behaviors of those who have successfully done that which you want.

  4. Take action!  Your action will be the cause of the effect.  Make sure you choose actions that support you belief.

  5. Measure your results.  Don't wait until the very end.  Check your results alng the way.  Are you moving in the right direction.  If not, reassess you action steps.

  6. Try again.  There is no definite time frame on when you will get the effect (results) you want. But, keep moving forward.  Keep your actions aligned with your belief and your result will come.

Do You Know You Don't Know?

I attended a seminar recently and the presenter asked us to raise our hands based on our levels of education. She broke us down into those that had finished high school or less, those who had completed college or less, and those who had advanced degrees.  As I member of the last group I was taken aback when she said,

"You guys are the worst to present to beause you think you know it all.  My favorite is the first group because they know they don't know."

Of course she was just setting her presentation up and went on to explain the four levels of competency.  I am repeated them here because I think it is very relevant to personal understanding and growth.  The levels are not only a reflection of competence but it relativity to consciuosness.   Here they are:

The Four Levels of Competency

  1. Unconsciously/Incompetent - You don't know you don't know.  Ignorance.  There is something out there you can't do, but you not even aware that you can't do it.

  2. Consciously/Incompetent - You know you don't know.   There is something out there that you can't do and you know you can't do it.  For example, playing a musical instrument.  You know there is such a thing as a piano and you know you can't play it or at least play it well.

  3. Consciously/Competent - You know you know.  You are aware of the piano and have actively practiced until you can play the piano well.  You know the scales and can read musis and are consciouly applying the knowledge and skills you have learned.

  4. Uncounsciously/Competent - You don't you know.  This is mastery.  You have learned to play the piano so well you are not conscious of the scales, the notes; it just flows.

So why talk about this here?  I see it as very relevant to living a passionate, success-driven life.  One of the things I try to do with my blog, BridgingGaps, and this newsletter is to make you at least conscious. And with some of the tips, techniques, coaching sessions and courses I offer, I hope I can help develop your skills in the personal development arena.  If I do that well enough, you will be living a passionate, successful life without having to give much thought to it.  You will just be.

Now, I want you to think about your life.  Is it where you want it to be?  Are you conscious of what you don't know?  Are you actively building your knowledge and skills about your own self-development?  If not, why not.  If not now, when?
